Welcome

Welcome to the documentation of Bloonix Monitoring Version 2.

If you need help, you can also contact our forum at the website community.bloonix.org.

What is Bloonix

Bloonix is – alongside the company of the same name Bloonix – a software for monitoring IT infrastructures. The software is developed in the programming languages Python 3 and JavaScript, whereat JavaScript is only used at the client side in a browser.

With Bloonix everything can be monitored what is to be reached about a network connection and for which there is a Plugin. Hardware components can be also monitored on which Bloonix cannot be installed, as for example Router, Switches, Loadbalancer or other hardware whose status about SNMP or any protocol can be questioned.

Scalability

Bloonix’s server software is highly available and highly scalable and can be operated on multiple servers for load distribution

Plugin based monitoring

Bloonix is a plugin-based monitoring system and, among the rest, disposes of Plugins for the monitoring of Linux, Windows, Apache, Nginx, Varnish, Memcached, Redis, MySQL and PostgreSQL. The Plugins are developed steadily.

Nagios plugins can be used, but with the restriction that the metrics of the Nagios plugins are not evaluated. We therefore always recommend preferring Bloonix plugins, especially since each Bloonix plugin has its own configuration form in the web interface. If a plugin is not yet available, you can request it from us as a feature request.

Supported operating systems

For the application of Bloonix an unix based operating system and Python from version 3 is required. We recommend the use of Linux, with pleasure Debian, Ubuntu or Rocky Linux, because there are ready packages for the distributions.

The Bloonix Agent should be able to be installed on any Linux distribution. If there is no ready-made package suitable for the distribution, it is still possible to install the agent manually.

Short history

  • 2006: In January, 2006 the first lines code were written for the monitoring software Bloonix.
  • 2010: In April, 2010 Bloonix began the cloud solution.
  • 2014: In November, 2014 the whole software was licensed by Bloonix under the GPLv3.
  • 2015: In March, 2015 Bloonix wins together with the software project Lychee the Open-Source-Price 2014 which were initiated of the Buch7.de.
  • 2018: In 2018 we decided to rewrite the entire application from Perl to Python. The web application was also to be rewritten and designed from scratch.
  • 2024: The new version of Bloonix was launched silently in September 2024. The new version is not compatible with the old version. A migration from v1 to v2 is far too complex, as the level of complexity is too big due to the changes to the database structure and the plugins.
  • 2025: In March, 2025 the whole software was licensed by Bloonix under the Server Side Public License v1 (SSPL).
