Local, Remote, Satellite

When setting up services such as an HTTP or ping check, it is possible to have the check executed by the Bloonix server or the Bloonix satellite rather than the Bloonix agent. We would like to take a closer look at the possibilities this opens up in this document.

To be precise, this concerns the following parameters in the service setup form:

If this switch is present, the service can be checked over the network and does not necessarily require a Bloonix agent to run.

Local – Bloonix-Agent

If the switch is disabled, as shown in the following graphic, the service is executed by the Bloonix agent installed on the server:

Remote – Bloonix-Server

If the parameter is enabled, the service is checked by the Bloonix server.

Satellite – Bloonix-Satellite

If the parameter is turned on and satellites are set up, the service can be checked from other locations.

Advantages of a remote check

Remote testing has the great advantage that it allows you to check how well a service performs over the Internet from different locations. This primarily includes services that can be accessed over the Internet using the SMTP, IMAP, POP3 or HTTP protocols. In addition, all layers up to the actual service are included, for example if a service is operated behind a chain of proxies.

As soon as satellites are used and a service is tested via them, there is also a special dashboard for the service in the WebGUI, which can be used to filter the response times of different locations.
